Common stereotypes - Luther:

Camerawork

The two characters within this clip from Luther are male and female. There are various stereotypes which are used daily on each of these types of gender, many of these are shown within this clip through the camera, sound, mise en scene and editing. The camera work used within the clip indicates straight away where the two characters stand within the hierarchy. This is portrayed by the low angle shots consistently used on the male, and high angle shots used on the woman. The reason for this is because a low angle shot represents a character as being in power, and near the top of the hierarchy, whereas a high angle shot indicates that the character has some sort of weakness in comparison to other characters, this is typical of a common stereotype as men will usually have more power over women. However the establishing shot of the woman may indicate that she has more to offer, and that she is more important than you think.

Soundtrack

Throughout the majority of the scene a soundtrack is used in the background, this slowly builds up and develops more and more tension between the two characters, this shows that the genders are clashing together in a negative way and creates a very tense atmosphere. This is a non diegetic sound as it is not a genuine sound, and builds up tension between the two characters, which in my opinion makes me think throughout the majority of the clip there is a big argument waiting to happen. This is a very common occurrence in TV programmes where male and females clash personalities and I believe it could happen very soon.

Mise en scene
The lipstick the woman wears within the clip is red, this colour may indicate love as she is trying trying to impress the man which is also shown by the way she dresses up nicely for the man in order to set a good impression. She also asks him many personal questions such as about his marriage which may indicate she is intrigued to find out whether she has a chance, also the fact she asks if he has came to her apartment for sex which may indicate that she would like him to yes. Therefore this may be trying to show that there is a strong bond between the two characters, and perhaps later on in the series we could expect to see them, or one of them to fall in love.

The woman's apartment is very neat, and looks the part. The objects around the rooms are very odd for a woman of her age in my opinion. Such as telescopes, books, unordinary computers and scientific ornaments. To me, this makes me think that she's a very strange and mysterious character, which makes it hard to interpret her expressions. Some people say that this is typical of a woman to be very hard to understand, therefore this is also a common stereotype.

Editing
Throughout the majority of the clip, non continuity editing is most present. This helps to make the scenes look more constructed and professional rather than continuously the same, and helps to draw the audiences attention to certain scenes, by doing this it creates a strong will to understand what's going on between the two characters. Shot reverse shots are used very regularly within this clip, from the start where they are on the top of the roof, all throughout the end until the male leaves the apartment, this is due to a constant conversation going on between the two characters. This editing technique helps to understand the feelings of each character after each word they speak, and particularly in this clip it could be a feeling of love from the woman towards the man, whereas a neutral, emotionless feeling from the man towards the woman.

Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema was an essay written by Laura Mulvey. Within a music video, the male gaze occurs when the audience is put into the perspective of a heterosexual man. A scene may focus on the curves of a woman's body, putting you the viewer in the eyes of a male. An example of this particular male gaze occurs within the music video "call on me" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOnWxJcay4U. The clip consists of many women performing a more sexual type of yoga, in which they consist of revealing themselves, dancing sexually and touching themselves purely for the enjoyment of the male present at the front of the room. This clip presents women in a more natural situation unlike most music video and is a lot more realistic, however the media clearly tries to portray these women as a more upper class in differ to other women which complies with the male gaze theory. This could have a negative affect on girls that are not happy about the way they look as this video presents the females as a certain standard as the males expression shows through out the video. Commonly, this type of manipulation causes a large majority of teenage girls to feel very unhappy or even depressed as they see themselves as ugly in comparison to these models. Or even trying to make themselves look identical to the females present in videos, to extreme levels in some cases. This affect isn't just on women, men also get a false idea on what the majority of females look, and expect almost every woman to look like the woman in these videos, leaving expectations of the way they look far too high, as these women are a minority. This may cause males to just look at the looks of a female and nothing else such as their personality.
In comparison to this particular clip the male is constantly "checking out" the females, as they perform a dance for him. He then picks out one individual woman and begins talking to her and leaves the rest to continue dancing. This gives the impression that it was part of his plan to decide a girl to try and chat up by the way they looked whilst performing. Which makes the woman seem like a box of chocolates and the male has decided to pick his favourite one out. Whereas the females are trying their best to compete with eachother for the males satisfaction, and in order to do so have dresses up in revealing clothing. This may aggravate feminists as they are against women rvealing themselves, therefore this video may offend certain people.

Roles within the film industry

Different Roles within the film industry:

The writer is responsible for writing the script. Once they've handed over the script that's pretty much the whole of their creative involvement with the project. If the producer has hired the writer to write the film the producer can ask for a re write of the script or even opt to bring in other writers if they don't feel the script is working, which is quite common.

The producer: A producer is commonly know for choosing the complete storyline of the film and almost independently shaping it together. Also, hire the director, choose the cast which is very important to get attention when marketing, negotiate rights and fully market the film. Therefore this role is one of the most important as its the complete structure of the film, and therefore as seen in the past, a lot of help will be given.

Casting director: After a film has been accepted and is ready to go, the director and producers hire a casting company to find the right talent for the production. A casting director's will first read the script scrip and then advise the producers and director on which stars to use in the film. This is a key area when developing the film as a lot of people will simply go and watch a film if their favourite actor is playing a part

Director: Usually, a film director controls a film's key aspects, and has control over the script whilst guiding the technical crew and actors in the correct direction. The director has a key role in choosing the cast members, production design, and the creative aspects of filmmaking.

Camera operator: The camera operator is responsible for physically operating the camera and maintaining composition and camera angles throughout a given scene or shot. In narrative filmmaking, the camera operator will collaborate with the director, director of photography, actors and crew to make technical and creative decisions.

Film Finance: Film finance is an aspect of film production that occurs during the development process prior to pre production, and is concerned with determine the potential value of the film. This outcome will decide where money should be spent in areas of the film development such as marketing which all in all will decide the films possible revenue.

Editing: As a film editor, they are responsible for assembling a recorded raw material into a finished product that's suitable for broadcasting. The material may include camera footage, dialogue, sound effects, graphics and special effects.

Production designer: Production designers are responsible for the visual outlook of a film. They identify a design style for sets, locations, graphics, props, lighting, camera angles and costumes, while working closely with the director and producer. So generally they are in charge of the majority of mise en scene.

Marketing: The procedure in which a film company decide to advertise there film. They can do this by putting up billboards, images on the side of buses, tv adverts and many more. This can come at a very large cost and be one of the most expensive costs a company can pay for. However this will help to determine the overall revenue the film makes and is one of the most important things when producing a film.

Exhibition: An exhibition is a large public showing, for instance this will be a film. An example of an exhibition is a film premier where they show off the movie and outline what its about.

Stages of film production Development - This is simply the process of 'finding' a story. Ideas for films come from a variety of sources, they can range from novels, real life events to computer game adaptations. Once you've got an idea you'll need someone to write a pitch for you which you take to a film producer in an attempt to get some funding to make your film. Even at this very early stage you need a very clear idea of who you're aiming you film at so you can include elements that will appeal to them.

Pre-production - Once you've got funding you establish your budget and can begin to get a film crew together, you can storyboard the script. You also need break the script down into individual scenes and identify all the locations, props, cast members, costumes, special effects and visual effects needed.

Production - This is simply the process of 'making' the film. Provided you've done your job properly in the pre-production stage making the film should be straight forward. 'Film' is very expensive and difficult to store so an increasing number of film makers are using digital cameras to save money.

Post-production - During this stage you take all the 'film' you've shot and give it to a film editor. They will then begin putting it together. Special effects will be added, a soundtrack will be added, any missing dialogue will be re-recorded and added resulting in a 'rough cut'. This will be shown to the director and a test audience who will offer feedback. Often this causes scenes to be filmed and added or removed.
